Poor Quality,

I'm going to be brief here, but this TV was not what I expected. I guess you really do get what you pay for.
The TV has lines in the picture. Avatar looked good on DVD, so maybe it's my cable connection. I'm not sure, if anybody has anything to add that would be great.

I purchased this TV last November and immediately sat down with my wife to watch the first 1080i movie that we could find on cable. It was "The Brothers Grimm" and the image quality really, really sucked.
The movie proved to be a really great shakedown cruise for the unit. It was filmed with extremely dark scenes that fought with the built-in auto contrast and made things muddy. There were other scenes that had extreme contrast differences in the same frame.
We were quite disappointed.
You'd figure that it would be easy to go into the controls for the set and make the appropriate changes to compensate for the shortcomings but after a while I realized that there were way too many different combinations. I needed to find some numbers that would get me close to the optimal calibration for the set.
Remember that the factory settings for any unit are usually set to look good in the store - not for general viewing.
I found these settings online and they made things 100% better! A couple of tweaks later I was more than happy with the image quality and haven't touched the settings since. These settings can be found at[...].
This is probably the best 40"+ for under [...] that you can get. Just remember that it needs calibration and the internal speakers aren't very good. A reasonably priced HTS is recommended.

OK ok people... Those who write complaints about the sound and picture quality need to step back and look at what else can be purchased for the same money and have as many terrific features as this TV. Of course it is not the best otherwise it would cost $1000+ instead of $549 when I bought it. Even the 1000 plus TV's still have crappy sound. The sound for this set is mediocre but thats why there is an optical out to hook up a Dolby surround sound setup. The picture is 1080p res and has the 60hz refresh - more than acceptable for normal HD programing. Gamers should obviously look for a set that has at least 120hz due to faster movements coming from a gaming console.
All in all - great TV for the money. If you are looking for the TOP TV on the market - this is not it...but you should know that by looking at the price.
Wonderful with a couple flaws,

Everything about it works great, and it's got a VGA input which we like to use for the computer periodically. However, it has a couple flaws, which is why I rated it 4 instead of 5.
--As the other reviews say, sound quality is a little tinny. It's not horrible--i use an external stereo but the speakers on the TV are good enough I leave them on as well.
--The other flaw only recently appeared, and it's that the remote doesn't work for the TV for the first minute or two after you turn on the TV. Bad for those occasions when you've left the volume up the night before and there are people sleeping when you turn the TV on. It's also annoying when you leave the TV on a different source and can't change it the next time you go to use the TV.
I would and have recommended this TV.
