Easy and affordable expansion for my DVR,
by Steven Chambers, 2009-12-14
The hard drive on my Direct TV HR-21 HD DVR was starting to skip and freeze, which led me to believe that the hard drive was starting to fail. I purchased this DVR expander primarily to fix this problem, using it as a substitute Hard Drive for my receiver since it was less expensive than buying a new receiver. Expanding the capacity of my DVR, which I did want to do, was only a secondary consideration.
I had some doubts about using this item because it doesn't state that it can be used with the Direct TV receiver but I thought I'd try it anyway. Needless to say I am extremely pleased with both the ease of installation and performance of this drive.
Following the simple instructions..,plug it in, power it up, then power up the DVR, I had no problems whatsoever. My hard drive problem was fixed, I now have 3x the disk capacity and I saved a few dollars over replacing the receiver. Keep in mind the following:
1) The drive must be powered up before the DVR. From everything I read this is a crucial step. Doing it this way I had no problems as the
DVR found the disk on start-up.
2) You will have to reenter all your favorites since this replaces the internal hard drive. It does not work in conjunction with it.
3) It takes a few hours to repopulate your programming. I simply installed the disk at night so that in the morning everything was there.
I highly recommend this drive.
Works great,

Plugged it in, powered up Scientific Atlanta DVR and the expander was recognized, formatted and ready to go. Works flawlessly and provides what seems like unlimited recording capabilities.
All of your program-saving decisions resolved!,

The concept of DVR expander is a great one - I'm pretty sure if you're reading this, you've had to make the same decisions I have because of the puny recording space your Scientific Atlanta DVR allows - what to save and how long you can save it. With only about 20 hours of integral HD recording ability, you've had to dump shows you wanted to keep, and may have missed shows you wanted to record because you ran out of space. This is pretty common if you have any series in your queue, since you may accidentally record a marathon that fills up your disk without your knowledge. If any of these scenarios strikes a chord, then you have hit upon the solution. This expander is the bomb! Over 120 hours of HD storage + plug and play hookup to your DVR = viewing Nirvana. My DVR (SA 8300 series) instantly recognized the Iomega drive (attractively packaged and super quiet, I might add) and was good to go! No problems so far - just lots and lots of new disk space for all the Discovery, Science, and Animal Planet series out there in addition to my ususal time shifting lineup.
Could it be any easier?,

I am using a PACE DVR supplied by Suddenlink. I plugged in the Iomega drive and booted up the DVR. THe DVR recognized the Iomega drive and asked if I wanted to format. I did. There was nothing else to do. I now have 7x the program storage. In service for 45 days.
Now my DVR can hold enough,

I have a Scientific Atlanta DVR. It only holds 320 GB of programming. It took 5 minutes, in total, to install this expander. It could not work more perfectly. I did not even have to reprogram the recording of my shows. I did not lose any of my previous recordings ( I had been warned that I would). My capacity went immediately from 63% full to 4% . This was a fantastic purchase.
