use this a while before you rate it,
by C. B. PIEJA, 2010-07-29

I have had my second unit (refurbished provided by co to replace 1st) for a little over a month. It appeared to be working . Now it is doing the same thing the old one did. Every so often it will only record 10 to 45 minutes of a show or movie. You never know if you are going to get your recording. Tech support is very difficult to deal with. I had to keep going on chat sessions to convince them it was their unit and not my DVR. They finally sent the refurb with no warranty, so now I have a non working unit.

Don't hesitate,

After purchasing a dandy HDTV (also from Amazon), I was hooked on HD. Unfortunately, the HD DVR that Time Warner provides has next to NO capacity to record in HD. I found myself recording everything in non-HD. How dumb is that? But I needed the capacity. Time Warner does not offer a higher capacity HD DVR and doesn't expect to any time soon. I previously purchased a different brand of expander but it didn't work with my Scientific American HD DVR. A friend brought this one to my attention. I noted that people with the same DVR I have had been successful in using this. I ordered it then and there. When it arrived, it took me all of 10 minutes or so to set up. I used the company installation info but also printed off a couple of the previous recs that gave very detailed instructions. Worked like a charm. I lost none of my saved recordings. I went from over 30% full to around 4%. Have gone in and reset almost all of my recordings to HD again and still only hover around 6-7% full. When buying an expander it is important to be sure the one you are purchasing will work with your DVR. I noted some of the negative reviews were a result of purchasing of this expander by people owning DVRS that reviews had clearly stated wouldn't work with this expander. One tiny quibble. Would be nice if the cable plugged in more tightly both at the DVR end and at the Iomega end. I continue to be nervous that I am going to have to move my components and accidently bump the Iomega and unplug it. That would be bad. Have had it for about a month now and am VERY satisfied. Would purchase again in a heartbeat.

A couple extra steps, but otherwise flawless...,
by W. D. Gagliani, 2010-07-03

This Iomega DVR expander drive was easy to install, but the manual leaves a little to be desired if, like me, you take things literally. The skimpy instructions leave the impression that you MIGHT lose any data (programs) you have stored on your DVR, but I think it's only in case of accidental unplugging. In any case, the actual connecting of the device is simple. You turn off your Scientific Atlanta DVR and unplug the back. Included data cable from DVR back to device back, and power cord from device back to your household outlet. There's a stand you can use to prop up the device. I laid mine flat without the stand. Once you reconnect the power to the DVR, the device will ask to be rebooted. Here's where I worked up a sweat: first the DVR rebooted. Then a blue box came up on the screen asking for the drive to be formatted. This was mentioned in the instructions. I pressed A for yes and waited for another reboot. So far, so good. Then, when the DVR box had rebooted, the same blue box popped up and asked for the device to be reformatted again. Again I pressed A for yes, and waited. This made me nervous -- why the extra reboot? Then the reboot was over and the same blue box popped up again. Reluctantly, I pressed A for yes again, but this time nothing happened -- no reboot. I pressed the green List button on my remote and was surprised (but happy) to see that my 95% full DVR now showed 11%. And it's been a full week now of flawless operation. As far as I can tell, the DVR box manages the Iomega exactly as it's supposed to. All remote functions work. No program data was lost. The extra reformat commands were surprising and not at all covered as possibilities by the manual, but I didn't panic and all was well. I would say the instructions should refer to possible extra steps, but otherwise the device earns an A+.

Seamless Expansion,
by M. Lockman, 2010-06-24

Hooked the drive to my Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300D DVR. The first two (2) times it got hung up on formatting and then the third time it hooked up and has been working seamlessly every since. If you have a problem getting it to expand your DVR go through the start-up sequence again.

Didn't work with 8300HDC,
by Excelwithme, 2010-06-20

I bought this hoping it would work with the SA 8300HDC (Service Provider is Time Warner Oceanic). I was able to install it with no problems. When I tried recording a World Cup game (2.5 hours), it only recorded 15 minutes. Of the 15 minutes, there were a lot of audio and video dropouts. This also happened when I recorded another program. That one was for 1.5 hours and it only recorded 14 minutes.
