Excellent in Kitchen,
by Louis F. Borkowski, 2009-01-31

For best picture quality, use the S-Video input cable if you can.In the "personal"mode adjust contrast to 99 ,brightness to only 10 , color to 58, tint to 0 and sharpness to 50.I run my Direct TV Satellite Rcvr right into the S-Video Connection and the picture is gorgeous at those settings. It is "Cable-Ready.

A Keeper!,
by B. Queman, 2009-01-25

After a bit of tuning, and a decent antenna (RCA flat-type) I got a very nice, extremely bright and contrasty picture. The sound was fine after selecting "movie" mode. My only complaint is that the price dropped by [...] right after I purchased mine. So for 120 bucks this is a steal.

Good bang for the buck,
by Timothy Wortman, 2009-04-02

I was looking for a small TV to replace a unit that won't operate with a converter box in my Mom's kitchen. This one fit the bill. Nice little TV, and good bang for the buck. I noticed other users complained about the audio. Sounds great to me.

Price worth it139 miles away,
by James French, 2009-06-20

I have found this good for what I had planned it for.

I wanted a 'portable'DTV for my car along with a VGA and composite inputs and that
would run off of 12 volts supplied by the cigarette lighter if I needed. This little
TV does exactly that.

I have had this for the six months and have had it a lot of places during my travels
and it hasn't failed to pick up those 'weak' signal stations. It does pick up a LOT
of stations even with a coat hanger cut to 19" and stuck into a cb antenna magnet
mount on the car. Not the best type of antenna, but I have been able to tune in DTV
stations from 60+ miles away with this setup. Not the best signal for those distant
stations but enough that this TV will detect them while scanning and allow me to
hook up a better antenna if I want to. This past weekend was able to pick up plenty
of stations outside my TV market area (Detroit) with an outside antenna at 30 feet.
Was able to scan for stations in Cleveland (117 air miles away), Bowling Green, OH
( 65 miles away), Flint ( 43 miles away ), and South Bend, IN ( 139 miles away ).
This is the only gripe I have with the TV is that I can't scan in one direction and
then point the antenna in another and rescan without loosing what I already scanned.

The screen is a little smaller than I expected for use for a VGA monitor, but it
works for what I use it for.

I would recommend this DTV for anyone who wants a portable setup that would run off
of 12volts in the car and needs to view weather radar or keep up with local events
while mobile.

As a reminder, you will not be able to use the 'digital' portion while in motion as
the timing of the signal causes the picture to pixelate while in motion and it won't
lock onto the signal.

Good but died young -- Update 6/10/09,
by Jaw, 2009-03-19

I wrote a good review for this TV not long after I got it. It was delivered and (easily) set up on 3/17/09. Since then, i've used almost every day. I have it in the kitchen to watch while i'm making dinner. I've been overall happy with it and satisfied, as i said in the review below. But---last night i had it on and was preparing dinner, when i heard a little poof noise and the sound went dead. I looked at the TV and the screen was dark and there was a little stream of whitish gray smoke coming up from one area of the top of the TV, going up toward the ceiling. I unplugged it and soon the smoke stopped what ever burned seemed to be finished burning. I put it outside. It's about 2 1/2 months old.

I called Amazon to tell them what happened. The representative said that the replacement warranty was only good for the first 30 days. She said "here's what i need you to do," and she said to call the Coby company and she gave me the number. She said to find out what they wanted me to do. She said if they give me a reference number and if they say Amazon can just replace the TV, i can call Amazon back with the reference number and Amazon will replace it. So i called Coby and they told me to ship the TV to them, they gave me the address and they gave me a reference number. Then i told her what the Amazon woman had said about giving Amazon the reference number and Amazon could replace the TV. The Coby rep said yes, that would be much faster to do it that way, and i mentioned too that it would be a lot easier for me, and she said i could do that. So i called Amazon back and got a different representative. She said the same thing about the 30 day warranty limit. I told her what the first rep i talked said, her name happened to be Crystal, i had taken note of it. The new rep started explaining to me about the 30 warranty so i asked if i could speak to Crystal. So the new one said she would read Crystal's notes. She put me on hold for a while, then came back and said they would make an exception and would send me a new TV. I said thanks. I got an email that says it was shipped out today. it's supposed to be here on 6/15.

So, I still give them the 5 stars. The TV blew up but i didn't see other reviews saying that happened to anyone else, so hopefully it was a fluke. I greatly appreciate the customer support. A good warranty is part of what can make a product recommendable.

2nd update 6/20/09 Just to say the TV arrived by overnight shipping, on 6/12, much quicker than promised. i appreciate that. It works ok so far. Fingers crossed.

Here's the original review:

I have been needing a TV in the kitchen to watch while i'm cooking. I get home from work and freeway traffic and all i want to do is listen to the drama on cable news on TV and eat my dinner. But first i have to cook the dinner, and my TV was in the next room, not in the kitchen. I would turn it up loud so i could hear it while cooking but that didn't work, i was always frustrated and aggravated that i was missing things, i would hear part of them and they sounded interesting but noises from the kitchen would cause the TV sound to cut in and out.

Finally i got tired of being aggravated and started looking for a small TV at as low a price as possible and this one on Amazon sounded perfect, as long as it worked. I don't need a great picture or great sound. I just want to follow what's going on on the show i'm watching until i can move into the other room when my dinner is ready to eat. I don't have much space for a TV in the kitchen, i needed a small one, but 7 inch was too small.

The coby TV arrived yesterday. I was so surprised at how light the box was that i was afraid it wasn't the TV after all but something else i ordered. It was a little smaller than i imagined. It's small enough to fit any place. The only question was, would it work. I plugged it into the cable tv cord and it started right up, after i changed the setting from 'air' to 'catv.' Before i figured that out, i thought it didn't work. After the set went through and selected all the channels, it worked fine. It has plenty of volume, that's something i had worried about. The sound is what you should expect from small tv (not hi fi) speakers, but after reading some reviews on Amazon that described the sound as thin, i was pleasantly surprised. To me, it's full enough to easily be heard over running water and other noises, it's robust for my purposes. The picture isn't great, but it isn't bad either, for what it is, a very small $130 TV. I didn't find that the adjustments made any real difference in the picture, but because it's cable, it's decent out of the box.

The remote is ok, i'd give it a C minus. maybe it's just mine, but sometimes i push the buttons and nothing happens. I would say it's not sensitive (the buttons). I don't see a mute button on it, and the volume buttons aren't always responsive.

All in all, having put the TV through its paces, I'm very pleased with it, it does exactly what i wanted. If it works for a year, i'll consider it a good deal and will get another one.

The instructions weren't that clear or detailed; definitely English was not the first language of the person who wrote the instructions so the language was kind of interesting in places. I've seen better instructions and i've seen worse. But once it's set up, i don't see a need for the instructions. I was able to solve the one set up problem i had with the help of the instructions.
